Don’t Be Fooled By The NRH City Council

By Ron West – September 21, 2004

In a special session called to canvas the Senior Tax Freeze Election Results on Monday, September 20th, 2004, the council also passed the ordinance enacting the tax freeze for our Seniors and Disabled.  The entire meeting took only minutes and the entire council lived up to its promise to enact the freeze if passed by the voters.  As everyone already knows, it did pass by an over 2 to 1 majority.

The joke of this session was that Councilman Metts was recognized by Mayor Trevino so that it would he would get credit for making the motion to approve the freeze.  Everyone needs to remember that this is the same Councilman Metts who called proponents of the freeze “political terrorists” and indicated that they were out for personal gain!  He was also the Councilman who said he was against the freeze and would vote against it when it was being discussed.  (Looks like the one out for personal gain was Mr. Metts if he thinks he will get any credit for making the actual motion.)

Councilwoman Bielik and Councilwoman Cox were the only two proponents for the freeze on the council and the election was called only after two other opponents of the freeze were defeated in the May elections.

Credit for this victory for the people belongs to Bielik & Cox and NOT to the other members of this spendthrift council.  They had projected spending the increases in valuations on the seniors and disabled for years and years into the future and fought the freeze election by resorting to electioneering with the City Newsletter, signs and a massive dose of misinformation.
