Lewis, Mayor: Trying to Steal the Election
by Steven Bielik
It appears that Lewis and the Mayor Trevino have determined that their incumbent slate can not win the election fairly by using the American democratic process. So, Lewis and Mayor Trevino have opted to try to steal the election instead.
In a campaign disclosure form that Lewis recently filed, he disclosed that he received $100 from a company. There are very strict rules on compiling financial statements filed by candidates and Officeholders. One of those rules is that you must fully disclose who donated money. Mr. Lewis, in his most recent filing failed to completely identify a company that donated to him. He also failed to put addresses on his form for two of his donors. Both are required.
At the latest council meeting, there were a number of people wearing pins from a certain PAC that is active in this election. Apparently, members of the PAC were duped by Mayor Trevino and attorney George Staples into believing that it was okay to wear these campaign pins. This is a quote from “Political Campaign Guidelines” which can be obtained by any citizen from the city secretary: “Political signs are not allowed on city property (municipal facilities, parks, etc.) This includes parking of vehicles with political signs in city parking lots, tables or other exhibits with political banners, campaign material, etc.” Were these pins not campaign material? Were the rules not bent by the Mayor to allow them?
During the meeting, an alleged “citizen’s presentation” by a Hometown citizen was used to attack a document prepared by Councilwoman Bielik. The Hometown resident started his presentation by stating that this was a rebuttal of campaign literature by the opposition slate. The letter is actually Trevino’s rebuttal of the document that was sent to a citizen. Electioneering is not permitted in municipal facilities! The council meeting was city business conducted at city hall.
The mayor and the incumbents know that campaigning is illegal in municipal facilities, but choose to ignore electioneering laws when it conflicts with their political agenda. Why did the Mayor and incumbents choose to use this forum? It is obvious that they were trying to influence the citizens present at the council meeting and those citizens watching the broadcast. (All council meetings can be seen on cable TV, which is filmed by CitiCable.) It is not known whether the Mayor Trevino’s endorsed slate of Welch, Whitson, Compton and Lewis is using a tape of the council meeting broadcast to influence other citizens’ votes. Also, it saved them the expense of printing and mailing this campaign material to all the citizens who watched the meeting on cable. It is much cheaper and easier to do it for free by duping a citizen into reading your campaign literature during a council meeting.
Mayor Trevino’s arrogance apparently knows no bounds. Citizen presentations given by senior citizens, Mrs. Byrd and Anita McNeese, expressed opinions that were contrary to his own views. Mayor Trevino openly berated them. Later in the council meeting, he openly admonished Mrs. Byrd for remarks that were made by another person.
Don’t vote for the incumbent slate of Whitson, Welch, Compton and Lewis who openly flout the democratic process and hope no one will notice. Don’t vote for council members who allow the mayor to openly berate its female senior citizens on cable TV for asserting their opinions. Don’t let Lewis and the incumbents continue to oversee the financial affairs of the city and your hard earned tax dollars!
Don’t let Lewis and Mayor Trevino try to steal the election. Vote for citizens who obey the laws, pay their taxes, respect senior citizens and support open, democratic government. Help protect our city and real NRH values!
Elect Christopher, Martin, Siskel and West to the City Council.
